Yesterday I was accepted to become a poll worker in Durham, NC. This is the most impactful thing I feel I can do rn for the future of all of children and to protect our democracy. Here are some FAQs & how you can join me. I'm challenging myself to get 10 others to sign up! /1
This is important bc historically in many places the average age of a poll worker was around 70, and many states are expecting shortages, which will mean longer lines and maybe closed precincts. This isn't volunteer - it's a paid position, in NC $15/hr, including paid training
Qualifications generally are being a registered voter and not being a party official or candidate for office. They are esp looking for people with computer literacy skills and can carry 30lbs. You can sign up at your state's board of election website.
They also need people to staff early voting sites. As a young & healthy person, who works at home, doesn't go to restaurants and takes many precautions, this is a risk I feel is worth taking. I will also wear an mask (maybe an n95) & a face shield
I'm so passionate about this, i'm setting a goal for myself to get people off the sidelines. I want to inspire 10 people to sign up. for every person i convince, I'll make a $50 donation to @youcanvotenc a great non-partisan voter registration org here in NC, up to $500.
email me (askthedoubleshift at gmail) a screenshot of your confirmation email that you expressed interest on the website (it can take a little while for them to approve) or DMs open. I'm giving myself 1 week to get 10 people. LET'S DO THIS FUTURE POLL WORKERS!
even if you aren't in a swing state, this is still v important for down ballot elections too.
