Four months after Hurricane Katrina, which made landfall 15 years ago today, I went to see the wreckage. rudepundit.blogspot.com/2006/01/katrin…
In Slidell, I found this page of a book outside of a destroyed home. It says, "The Mystery of Atlantis" across the top.
My brother and I wandered through Slidell:

Then we went to the ruins of St. Bernard Parish, especially Chalmette:

Finally, we went to the Lower Ninth Ward, where we saw the barge that had come over the levee and flattened part of the neighborhood
The scene in the Lower Ninth was surreal. We talked to a couple of people there who were trying to piece together lives from the rubble.

And then we headed out. The city mostly still had no electricity. It was eerie on the highway as the sun set. rudepundit.blogspot.com/2006/01/katrin…
Always remember that the real disaster of Katrina wasn't the storm. It was the failed infrastructure that didn't protect the New Orleans area. Check out @TheAtlantic's Floodline podcast for a great reminder: theatlantic.com/podcasts/flood…
