Thread on #BoycottAmul trend.

The piece that seems to have triggered the trend is a @newslaundry story, which is part of our Bloodlust TV series. In this series, we alert advertisers to bigoted content they end up powering with ad money.

Sudarshan News is right up there when it comes to promoting hate and a repeat offender.

The point, however, is not to boycott brands but to alert the brand in case they don't know where their ads are being placed — many have agencies doing the work for them.

So, the point is to alert them and urge them not to power hateful content with their ad money. The good news? Brands actually listen.

Zalando News, Tylko, Hans Ander, MUBI India, Digital Ocean, Monster, WorldRemit, IPSoft, Berlin Packaging, Octopus Energy, Squarespace, CarMax, Sonic. These are international brands that have publicly withdrawn ads from OpIndia this year.

The point of our series is to get news consumers to engage with news and understand the news economy. Big Media is run entirely on ad money: government ads and corporate ads.

In the case of government ads, it's the taxpayers' money that's being spent.

So, the UP government must explain to us why they are spending our money on a channel that was set to do a show on 'UPSC jihad' targeting citizens on this country.

With private entities, it's a different matter. They are free to advertise with whoever they want to. But we as consumers of their products can question those choices. Indians across religions — Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Isaai — buy Amul products. So when an Amul chooses to be seen...

...on a platform like Sudarshan, which is know for fake news & hate-mongering, we can ask them why they would like to spend the money they make *from us* on a platform that is actively working to harm us. Sudarshan is a special case here because it's core competence is bigotry.

There is nothing else that channel does or is known for. So, again, Amul, Uttar Pradesh government, Hempushpa and Saheli, why would you want to use our money on a platform that is working 24/7 to harm us?
