Overall a big fan of the new recommended design concept for downtown Yonge Street. Big improvement over status quo, obviously. toronto.ca/community-peop…
When I looked at the data from Destination Danforth in my Toronto Star column this week, I expressed my wish for a similar transformation on Yonge Street, so, hey, great timing.
These Yonge Street pedestrian zones would be in effect from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m., enforced with handy gates like these.( I like that there will be actual infrastructure, instead of just hoping that drivers comply with restrictions.)
The lack of bike lanes along the whole section of downtown Yonge is probably going to be controversial. City says pedestrians should be priority w/ limited space, and points to University as an alternative. (Council will need to vote to make University bike lanes permanent first)
Modelling does not show major impact on streetcar travel times as a result of the Yonge changes, which is good because I was worried about that. Signal timing will probably be important.
For car drivers, biggest impact is projected on Church Street, where travel times are two minutes longer northbound versus “do nothing” projection. (But only 70 secs longer than current, so 🤷♂️)
Biggest drag in this report: the timeline. Construction from 2023 to 2025.
You can fill out a questionnaire and register for a (virtual) public event on Sept 16 on the project.
Council should then get a report and vote on this in December, so get hyped for that debate.
