BREAKING LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Gov. Whitmer says Michigan gyms can reopen, organized sports can resume, though recommends against contact sports
Whitmer is not prohibiting contact sports -- football, soccer, basketball, many others - but releases state health guidance strongly recommending against it
Whitmer did NOT reopen movie theaters despite some media reports that she would. Bowling alleys, roller rinks & ice rinks can reopen but only for the sole purpose of organized sports
Essentially, Whitmer is telling the MHSAA & youth leagues & school boards: You can play, but there's a 'high risk' of COVID transmission in contact sports: football, basketball, rugby, field hockey, soccer, lacrosse, wrestling, hockey, boxing, futsal, martial arts with opponents
Also, it looks like masks must be worn in ALL sports and inside gyms, including exercise, except swimming.
Whitmer's news release includes a quote from the Michigan State Youth Soccer Association, whose leader said he is 'pleased with the opportunity to move forward' & the group continues to work with UM Public Health to protect 90,000 players
What remains closed in much of Michigan: Movie theaters, performance venues, arcades, bingo halls, amusement parks, climbing facilities, dance areas, trampoline parks, water parks.
