Last night, fire ripped through #Moria refugee camp on Lesvos

The camp was home to more than 12,000 people including 4,000+ children

No casualties so far reported

This is not the first such fire👇but it’s by far the biggest⁣⁣

One thing that struck me about #Moria when I was last there, was the hope amid the squalor, the flowerbeds beside the razor-wire fencing

People there faced a crisis from every angle: medical, humanitarian & human rights.

But I also witnessed a huge amount of compassion & hope.

A week after fire in #Moria, thousands are still on the street

A decade since the start of the Syria crisis, Western politicians still cling to the belief any humanity will be a “pull factor” & try to make lives of asylum seekers as miserable as possible.

@nytimes journalist, @MatinaStevis has been to the charred remains of #Moria refugee camp on #Lesvos & spoken to some of the 10,000 people currently sleeping on the roadside.

This is a time for compassion & humanity, not political point scoring & grandstanding.

Germany has announced they will take around 1,500 refugees from Greece

@g_christides reports only 800 people have registered in the new temporary camp. Minister @nmitarakis said if ppl from #Moria don't go to the new camp willingly “the police will be forced to get everyone in.”

The Greek govt has now promised to get the 13,000 former #Moria residents off #Lesbos by Easter

This is great news & something @amnesty has been campaigning for for years

The only trouble is, between now & Easter, there is something called “winter”.

Police have begun moving hundreds of people into a new temporary tent camp in Lesvos more than a week after a fire razed Greece’s biggest refugee camp, #Moria, to the ground.

Many people don’t want to go to the new camp.

They want to get off the island.

With the ashes of #Moria refugee camp still warm, the Greek govt must take immediate action to provide humanitarian relief & move refugees & asylum seekers to safety.

Take action now & send a message to @PrimeministerGR here 👉amn.st/6012GQAFe
