Are cover letters still a thing?

Does anyone in HR or hiring actually read cover letters? I have nothing to say relative to my competency. Sure if you are a tech company looking to find a work-culture fit I guess get wanting to know "about me." But law firms, wouldn't you rather just have a legal writing sample?

Why do I have to sneak in backdoor brags, quirky experience, and platitudinal antidotes into an awkward paragraph about how I can make their company better? If an employer is interested aren't they just going to google me?

Ive passed 2 bar exams is it really necessary for me to demonstrate my ability to multitask with an interesting story in an overly polished letter addressed to "Whom it May Concern"? IMO there is nothing about a cover letter that is honest or natural.

That being said, I need a job and if you require a cover letter I will send you one. Some places it makes sense, non profits or mission based companies. There are plenty of valid reasons to ask for a cover letter. (👈Not at all written for the benefit of potential employers👀)
