This morning, County Executive @DrSamPage dropped some facts about the importance of getting a flu shot as we continue to deal with COVID-19. Watch the full video from this morning here: facebook.com/25299726489194…
📰 Getting a flu shot has always been a key step in staying healthy. With the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s never been more important. Common symptoms of COVID-19 – fever, coughing, congestion, difficulty breathing – are similar to the symptoms of the flu.
➡ Getting a flu shot decreases your chances of getting the flu or makes infection with the flu less severe. Keeping people healthy and out of hospitals for flu treatment supports our community by preserving our capacity to provide hospital care for people with COVID-19.
➡ Flu shots do not prevent COVID-19, however, and we don’t want anyone to think the flu shot inoculates them from this pandemic. The CDC recommends that everyone six months and older receive a flu shot unless they have a medical reason not to do so.
➡ Flu viruses typically circulate from late fall through the early spring. While most people who become ill with the flu recover without serious complications, the flu can be associated with serious illnesses that require hospitalization.
➡ All the steps we take to reduce the spread of COVID-19 apply to prevent the flu: social distancing, wearing masks, and frequent handwashing. If we remain diligent with these safety measures, we can continue to bring down COVID-19 infections and prevent the spread of the flu.
➡ @StLCountyDOH will offer FREE drive-up flu shots at John C. Murphy Health Center in Berkeley and the South County Health Center in Sunset Hills, and at other pop-up events across the county starting in late September. Appointments can be requested at stlcorona.com/covid-19-testi…
➡ Flu shots are widely available at urgent care centers, doctors’ offices, and through many of our employers. We encourage everyone to take advantage of these options and #GetAFluShot.
