Trump ad asks people to support the troops. But it uses a picture of Russian jets politi.co/3c5vPCb via @politico @dlippman @BryanDBender

“That’s definitely a MiG-29,” said Pierre Sprey, who helped design both the F-16 and A-10 planes for the U.S. Air Force. “I’m glad to see it’s supporting our troops.”

The mistake is the latest in a long line of errors involving politicians running ads or tweeting photos showing Russian military hardware.

Last year, Rep. Brian Mast tweeted this on the Navy's birthday

Update: After this story was published, we got a response from Arthur Zakirov, a Russia-based hobbyist photographer who created the image. He told @dlippman that not only are those MiG-29s, but the soldiers are Russian models

“Today you hear about the Kremlin’s hand in U.S. politics. Tomorrow you are this hand,” he joked, saying he found the fact that his photo ended up in a Trump fundraising ad “pretty funny.”

“Everything happened through inattention,” he said

"Support Our Troops" is now trending
