Australian PM, the Hon Malcom Turnbull, & the Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, the Hon Petter Dutton MP, took immediate action and terminated the 457 visa program & replaced it with a work visa program that increased strict labor certification enforcements.
Here in the US, it’s a different story. There have been ZERO reforms made to the highly abused H-1B/L visa program since its inception in 1990. In fact, special interest groups have lobbied to INCREASE the amount of visas!
Every year, around 75% of H-1B visas go to citizens from one country—India. India submits 6.5x of H-1B petitions than China! These aren’t “best & brightest” rocket scientists we are importing in either. These are ordinary workers coming in to displace US workers.
Because our Congress turned H-1B into “duel-intent” visas, this meant there was nothing temporary about them & they could all remain indefinitely after a Green Card application was filed (AC21). This naturally led to backlogs because more H-1Bs filed for GCs than GCs available.
Instead of focusing on protecting American workers from job displacements and seeing the harmful effects of guest worker visa programs inflicting upon local citizens, you have Congress with Senators like @SenMikeLee & @JohnCornyn pushing bills to help H-1B workers.
