QUESTION: A new scandal has arisen after allegations of hysterectomies practiced on immigrant women in a detention center in Georgia. What are the implications of these accusations? We asked our venerable colleague @GCorreaCabrera. Follow this thread for the answer.
ANSWER: "Advocacy groups have filed a complaint against this migrant detention center appealing to these accusations, as well as supposed medical neglect during the COVID-19 pandemic and lack of virus safety measures.
The information about alleged hysterectomies without proper "informed consent" was provided by a whistleblower, a nurse who used to work there.
In case these accusations are proven truE we would be witnessing atrocious acts against extremely vulnerable people that are seeking asylum or a better life in the U.S. It is worth noting that there is a history of forced sterilization that involved U.S. authorities last century.
The experience of Puerto Rico is emblematic, particularly at a moment when nearly one-third of all Puerto Rican mothers were sterilized. The practice of hysterectomies at ICE detentions centers without their informed consent is absolutely unacceptable;
acts like this should have severe consequences for the perpetrators.
Not withstanding the last, it would be extremely important to conduct a deep investigation to verify or deny these serious accusations made by a whistleblower, in order to achieve real justice at a key political moment in U.S. history."
