Today is a sacred day for me in not one but four ways.
First, today is Mahalaya. End of Pitru-paksha,start of Devi-Paksha.
Secondly, today is Vishwakarma Puja, the God of artisans and craftsmen. The day is significant in another way. It is the only Hindu festival which
(subject to rare exceptions) falls on the same day in the Gregorian calendar, that is on 17th September.
Thirdly it is the Janma-tithi puja of Swami Akhandanandaji,a direct disciple of Thakur Ramakrishna and the 3rd President of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission. But for us
Swayamsevaks of the RSS,Akhandanandaji is the Guru of our Guru,PP Guruji Golwalkar. Guruji, after resigning his position as Professor of Zoology in Varanasi Hindu University came and joined the Ramakrishna Math and Mission as a Brahmachari and was posted under Akhandanandaji at
Sargachhi, near Berhampore,Distt Murshidabad in Undivided Bengal. There he worked for relief among people, mostly Muslims, when famine was raging. After Akhandanandaji left his worldly abode, Guruji joined the RSS and in three years was made the Sarsanghchalak. It is he who nursed
our RSS through its trials and tribulations and made it the greatest voluntary organisation in the world. It is he who concieved the idea of Vividh Sangathanas like the VHP,BJS,ABVP etc, where Swayamsevaks, with inspiration and ideals taken from the Sangh, can engage in activities
of their respective fields while the Sangh remains engaged in unifying Hindu society.
And last but not the least,it is the birthday of Narendra Damodardas Modi. He is not just our Prime Minister. By all evidence
he is the incarnation of Lord Krishna who has arrived in this world to save good men and kill rogues.(Shrimadbhagavadgita IV:7-8)
