Our culture’s divisions can be overcome in the community of Christ. How? By the mind of Christ - the attitude of self-sacrifice rather than self-assertion.
Political discourse & argument - and so much more - is rooted in appeals to personal & tribal empowerment, fear, & domination or protection from the “other”. The Christian asks not “What’s best for me?”, but “How do I seek the good of the other?”
In the church, we come to the Table not on the basis of a mutually agreeable political creed but because the Spirit as united us in one Body through the cross. The walls our culture builds on foundations of personal rights & power are thrown down in the church.
This unity is both given and achieved. It must be maintained and it must be visible. This cannot be done by seeking to impose our views on others but by patiently seeking the good of the others, whatever our own view might be.
To have the mind of Christ - to enter as a servant to suffer rather than as a king to command - is the only way forward in a society he’ll-bent on demanding that “my rights” or “my views” or “my party” be given special preference. This is even more the case for those who...
