It was only a matter of time til my doom chart passions merged:
State & local government budgets are burning
Women's labor market outcomes are brutal
These are not independent!
[threadlet]
State & local Govs dominate public employment
They dominate public job cuts this recession.
They employ women disproportionately:
Last year women held > 13 million of 22.6 million government jobs
~ 1/3 of gov't jobs are in local education

Here's a key stat from yesterday's thread on state & local job cuts--939,000 of them so far. This is bad and poised to get worse in September.
One more on the finances courtesy of @lucydadayan (who you should be following! I'll wait.)

Women have been on the front lines of the #shecession.
They are also being left out of the #hecovery
5/
Women account for 62% of public jobs lost since February.
More than half a million jobs out of 830K government jobs lost.
(and that's with a huge boost from census hiring in August)
fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=vROt
Public jobs held by women are down ~4% in 5 months, w/ the Census boost.
Women have lost a greater share of pre-recession government jobs in every month of this recession
fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=vRPI
And now this is getting squeezed from both sides.
September means more cuts to staff as governments struggle to equip students & teachers for remote learning
September means more women are bearing the burden of caregiving for young children learning remotely
All the profiles of Manley Men who lost factory jobs in the last recession.
All the politicians feverishly promising to put them back to work.
When it happens to women does it make the papers?
If women's incomes fall does it make a sound in the Senate?
