*Raaga Basant Bahar*

Basant Bahar, a compound melodic structure that incorporates phrases from the raagas Basant and Bahar, is a vital presence in the spring soundscape of northern India. As is the case with many compound raagas, Basant Bahar has compositions

that bring in the different colours of the constituent raagas by displaying segments of each in separate lines of the song-text or by bringing in a quick succession of phrases of both raagas in the same line. Such raagas thus place demands on the artistic acumen of composers and

performers to judiciously select phrases from each of the individual raagas to flow into the other via conduit notes or phrases.

From shadja to madhyam, the tonal structure of both the raagas is the same however if in the latter part the aaroha of Bahar is to be shown then komal

gandhar is used, and if the aaroha of Basant is to be highlighted, then shuddha gandhar is used.

*Thaat*: This raaga is a fusion of two raagas of different thaats and hence there is no defined thaat for Raaga Basant Bahar.
