1/ Curriculum #Medthread about our Global Health Track & Scholars Program!

The OHSU IM Global Health Program endorses a broad definition of #GlobalHealth rooted in interdisciplinary collaboration to promote better health for all

2/ As the program has grown over the years, one of the highlights of the program was a rotation at Scottish Livingstone Hospital in Molepolole, Botswana through our Harvard/Beth Israel Deaconess partnership

3/ Program alumnus @AdamRodmanMD (host of @BedsideRounds) was a program participant, and then completed a #GlobalHealth fellowship!

Watch him talk about his experience at Scottish Livingstone Hospital here:

4/ Dr. Katie Ferguson, who graduated from our program this past June, is a current #GlobalHealth fellow!

(ps--photo from her GH rotation in Alaska--more on that to come!)

5/ One of the core tenants of our track is that “global health begins at home” & isn’t only about international rotations but services to underserved communities

According to Dr. Nyendak, APD until she relocated to Delhi, India, who was instrumental in the creation of the track:

6/ GH track R2s rotate "locally", with options such as...

-an Indian Health Service clinical rotation, options including:

🗺️sites in Round Valley, California
🗺️Chemawa Health Center, in Salem, OR
🗺️Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska

7/ other local rotation sites include:
✅corrections medicine
@VirginiaGarcia (provides medical care to migrant and farm workers & those with barriers to care)
@care_bridges (OHSU student run free clinic)
✅Community Resource and Referral Center (focused on homeless Veterans)

8/ #GlobalHealth and #PrimaryCare naturally overlap in many areas, including the focus on rural health and underserved care

We find there is natural synergy between the two programs in teaching topics, outreach to vulnerable populations, and interdisciplinary collaborations

9/ our partnerships also bring multidisciplinary collaboration with other learners at OHSU, including those rotating at the same sites plus innovative noon conferences, like one held with @OHSUradchiefs @OHSURadiology on chest xray findings during the Botswana rotation

FIN/ while COVID has changed rotations in the short term, the big picture remains:

a #GH skill set is widely transferrable & involves:
🌎reasoning w limited resources
🌎understanding social determinants of health
🌎humility to always be willing to learn
