What haunts HCW's is being forced to treat COVID+ patients without adequate protection, meaning at least a fitted FFP2/N95 respirator, which your recommend only for AGP's. @Cleavon_MD @DrKatrin_Rabiei @Dr2NisreenAlwan @drannehuang @itosettiMD_MBA
In NY, after seeing what happened in Italy and seeing a surge in cases, there was a consensus N95 respirators were required for healthcare workers. Everyone had to be fit tested and wear a N95 during the surge in NY. (1/
Of course, NY was counting PPE in the days and was in jeopardy of running out of PPE needed for healthcare workers. But sending HCW’s out to fight COVID without a fit tested N95 was never an option. (2/
Instead of treating N95’s as single use, HCW’s were required to double mask by wearing a surgical mask to cover the N95, that way the N95 was protected from blood, bodily fluids, or getting soiled and wet. N95’s were stored in paper bags until the next shift. (3/
Was extended use and reuse of N95’s ideal? No. The nurses union says reuse is unsafe and wants elastomeric respirators to be used. The state mandated one N95 per shift. But reusing N95’s for multiple shifts was safe. (4/
Because of the WHO guidance, nations including Australia, Canada, England, and Sweden follow WHO guidance of reserving respirators for aerosol generating procedures. (5/
What is the WHO guidance based on? The WHO guidance states that aerosols containing COVID-19 travel no further than 1 meter before dropping to the ground very quickly. This is the magic droplet theory that has no basis in aerosol science. (6/
There is a study published in The Annals of Internal Medicine that transmission is through inhalation, which after fixing the magic droplet theory, means transmission is virtually entirely through aerosols. (7/ acpjournals.org/doi/10.7326/M2…
Because of the magic droplet theory, the WHO does not recommend healthcare workers use respirators and nations including Australia, Canada, England, and Sweden. The CDC copied the PPE guidelines from New York. (8/
Most nations, however, will not provide their HCW’s with respirators for non AGP’s when treating COVID+ patients until the WHO recommends using respirators for all COVID+ patients. (9/
The growth in Victoria, Australia of COVID-19 was caused by the refusal to provide HCW’s N95’s due to the magic droplet theory accepted by the WHO. (10/
The only way to protect HCW’s outside the US, as a consequence, is to listen to Dr. Fauci and acknowledge that they did not know that droplets under 100 microns in size can stay suspended in the air for some period of time. (11/
And as a consequence of accept that COVID-19 is airborne, recommend respirators for all HCW’s treating COVID+ patients. (12/12)

According to Amnesty International, over 7000 healthcare workers died from COVID-19 worldwide. The WHO needs to abandon the magic droplet theory now and recognize that COVID-19 transmits through aerosols and N95’s are needed when treating all COVID+ patients! @CTZebra
