Lumber puncture is a procedure which is used in obtaining cerebrospinal fluid for the diagnosis of Meningitis, Multiple sclerosis, and various other disorders of the brain and spinal cord.

Lumber puncture involves the withdrawal of cerebrospinal fluid by means of a hollow needle inserted into the region of the lower back mainly between the 3rd and 4th Lumber vertebrae(which also earned it the name, “Lumber puncture”).

The lumber vertebrae are bones that make up the the backbone. The procedure is carried out under local anesthetic. The procedure is usually with no risk to the patient, but it can be hazardous in individuals with raised intracranial pressure(pressure within the skull).

Though the improved technologies and method of scanning like MRI Scan and CT have reduced the risk of performing this procedure on patients it can be hazardous to.

The side effects of this procedure include: Headache which is the commonest, it is usually worse on standing and reduces while lying down.
