Why Is India Obsessed With Cricket? #IPL2020

No surprises that the Brits imposed their culture and tradition to oppress Indians after colonization. But over the years India’s obsession with cricket continues. Thread👇

By the 1920s, cricket became a popular sport throughout the country surpassing traditional Indian sports. And with India’s independence came protests on banning cricket as “it was a slow poison blockading the path to independence”.

Indian Hockey team had a golden period between the 1920s and 70s, winning 11 golds at Olympics. But hockey missed out on one key aspect of sports: being telecast on DD National.

Introduction of DD national telecast in 1982 across India meant more people outside major cities had free access to live television. So when the Indian national cricket team won the 1983 Cricket World Cup, the entire country celebrated with them.

When the liberalisation budget was implemented in the 1990s, iconic cricketers were widely introduced in TV ads broadcasted across the country. They were now celebrities! In 2003 England introduced Twenty20 Cricket, which India went on to win in 2007.

This format of the game was introduced in India in 2008, as the Indian Premiere League as we know it today, further cementing cricket at the number 1 sport in India!

Something that was used as a medium of oppression over colonial rule, turned into an international success making India the center of cricket throughout the world today.
