Pandemics and climate change are co-related, says @MargaretAtwood
"It is not the worst moment in the history of everything," says @MargaretAtwood But notes that climate change is definitely a terrible moment in the history of everything, pandemics on the other hand, been there done that.
"It's not a 'The gods are angry' moment," she says with regard to the pandemic.
"you can't ever say, 'It can't happen here'"
In 2008, the financial meltdown let people trade freedoms for safety and here we are, she says.
Atwood says she didn't base Handmaid's Tale on the People of Faith Catholic cult -- it was a different one. "You can't take religion and put it in the bad box." Cites Sojourners as example of evangelicals living out their faith, fighting racism.
Evangelicals misinterpreted the Bible, says @MargaretAtwood -- Some are not loving their neighbors.
OMG she is a treasure. An absolute treasure.
"You can vote! Cherish that!"
@MargaretAtwood Atwood says the issue isn’t just women controlling their bodies. Points out that the draft is state control over men’s bodies, but they get salaries, housing, food assistance, etc. So how about that forced birth subsidy?
@MargaretAtwood "If you’re going to have malnutrition and forced childbirth you’re going to have a lot of dead people."
“How do you think critically at all of the stuff coming your way?”
“How do we think our way through emotional biases to identify things that are not true?”
You need to make sure it is actually true, she admonishes.
@MargaretAtwood People need critical thinking tools. (SERIOUSLY)
What a terrific hour. Made my week
