We're close to double digits. It's 100 days till the transition period ends.
This Tory Government says it's prepared, but there are still too many unanswered questions. ⬇️Thread⬇️
1. Haulage: I met with the @RHANews last week. They are tearing their hair out.
They since met with the Secretary of State and described the meeting as ‘a washout’.
This is not good enough. They need clear answers on their questions - and fast.
2. Lorry parks: In September, the Govt gave itself powers to build lorry parks in 29 local authorities, without consulting residents.
But where are these actually going to be? They still can't tell us. This basic info is the least local people deserve.
3. Customs agents: In May, Govt was falling short of training the 50,000 new customs agents & intermediaries needed.
Since then, they made £84 million available to grow the sector.
But today still no answers on how many agents are trained, or how much of that £ has been used.
4. IT Systems: We're not clear which of the 10 new systems needed will be operational.
There are vague soundings towards our customs agents and IT systems all being up and running later this month.
But I can’t help thinking these essential elements won’t be delivered on time.
5. Red tape: In the summer the Government admitted that there would be £7 billion of additional bureaucratic costs for UK businesses.
Where's the further clarity that's badly needed on this?
6. Our everyday economy: Sectors from farmers to hauliers and manufacturing are crying out for answers from the Government.
They are the backbone of British industry and need Ministers to get this right.
It's all well and good to tell businesses to “act now” but without the systems in place, frankly it’s like telling me to bake a cake without remembering to turn the oven on.
Gove's letter today is a list of promises for the future - when we needed better preparation months ago.
And now, Ministers have stated their new plans to have the police arrest British truckers for entering Kent without new travel passports.
With just over 3 months to go, how are businesses meant to prepare amid this Conservative carnival of incompetence? independent.co.uk/news/uk/politi…
The Conservatives have had 3 Prime Ministers and 4 years since the 2016 referendum.
But instead of delivering something they said was easy and oven-ready, we’ve seen incompetence and u-turns.
It's time for the Government to sit up and a get a grip on preparations now.
