THE BIRTH OF ZEUS
Greek Mythology

After defeating Uranus, the Titan Cronus began his reign as the supreme ruler of the world. During the reign of Cronus, the golden age of men emerged and during this golden age, peace harmony were abundant in the world.

However, such was not the case in the world of the gods. Just like his father, Cronus had become a tyrannical leader. After marrying his sister Rhea, he feared that he would suffer the same fate as his father. Due to this fear, Cronus swallowed his children after their birth.

Rhea soon became tired of Cronus devouring her children and went to her parents Uranus and Gaia for advice on how to stop Cronus.
Following their advice, the next time Rhea was pregnant, she descended to earth and gave birth to her child in a cave located on the island of Crete

Throughout the birth, the cave was guarded by Curetes(Kourites), whom many myths associated with the Dactyls.
As Rhea gave birth, she tried to stifle her cries and dug her fingers into the earth. From each finger rose one of the ten Dactyls, the inhabitants of the cretan mountains

The child Rhea gave birth to was named Zeus. She left him to be raised by the nymphs of the forest. Cronus knew Rhea was pregnant and was waiting to devour the child.
Rhea locked herself in her chamber and cried, pretending to be in labour pains. As she left her chamber, she had

a rock wrapped up in a baby blanket. Cronus thought this to be his child and proceeded to swallow the rock. Rhea let out cries of pain pretending to be sad yet deep down she was joyful that she had managed to save her son from the cruel hands of Cronus.

Meanwhile, Zeus grew up in the cave where he remained hidden in the Cretan Mountains. Amalthea the goat suckled the infant and her horn, the cornucopia, produced all manner of good things, while the nymph Melissa nursed Zeus and fed him from her nourishing honey to make him grow

faster.
As Zeus grew older, he was educated by an enchanted eagle who travelled the world and gave Zeus the news of everything that was happening. By the time Zeus became an adult, he was informed of his true identity and the tragic fate of his siblings.

Zeus began plotting a way to free his brothers. With the help of the titan Oceanus, Zeus found a potion meant to make Cronus vomit the siblings of Zeus.
Disguised as a celestial being, Zeus was able to convince Cronus that the potion was a nectar with great quality.

After drinking the nectar, Cronus began to feel nauseous and he threw up all his children(Hestia, Hera, Hades, Poseidon, and Demeter), as well as the stone used to deceive him.

With the support of his siblings, Zeus claimed for himself the supreme power over the world, but Cronus was not willing to give up his power so easily. Thus began the Titanomachy, the war of the titans.
