An educational thread about “Microaggressions: What are they? How can we respond?”

We hope this thread is an incentive for everyone to read more about the topics of microaggressions. As always, we encourage you all to do your own research and always seek further insights surrounding these discussions.

Some scholars argue that racism, sexism, homophobia, & other forms of discrimination are no longer as obvious as in the past. Instead, people may demonstrate their biases & prejudices in more subtle ways, otherwise known as 'microaggressions'.

What is a Microaggression?

In other words, this could take form based on race, income, social capital, religion, ableness, gender, immigration status, sexual orientation &/or other characteristics.

How does Microaggressions affect people?

While some people may believe that microaggressions are brief and harmless, many studies have found that
microaggressions have a significant negative impact on people’s mental and physical health.

If individuals do decide to take action, they must contemplate how to react.

Everyone has committed microaggressions. We have all done/said something that we may not have intended to offend someone, but somehow we ended doing so. Sometimes we are aware of it, & other times it takes another person to 👆 them out to you.

We need to admit when we commit microaggressions, learn from the wrongdoing, and apologize. We all make mistakes, consciously and not, and need to own up to them when we do.
