Back in May, I had made a case for a pay-per-view option for brand new movies going directly to OTT (forced by the pandemic-induced closure of cinema theaters, obviously). bit.ly/ppp-ott Glad to see it finally taking some decent shape in India with Zee Plex that is 1/5

/5 releasing 2 reasonably big movies, in Hindi and in Tamil, on October 2, 2020 (Gandhi Jayanti). The Hindi movie, Khaali Peeli, is priced at Rs.299 while the Tamil movie, Ka Pae Ranasingam, is priced at Rs.199. While the former does not have any saleable-enough stars, the

/5 latter does - one of the most saleable Tamil stars, Vijay Sethupathy. The best way to test the viability of pay-per-view and inculcate this habit in India is to offer more big-ticket films through this option instead of free-for-view option in OTTs. I'm fairly sure this

/5 option will continue to be ridiculed in India and many movies will fail, but a lot of paid-options were ridiculed in India in the beginning - free TV to satellite TV, free mp3s - streaming, satellite TV to multiple OTTs and so on. Pay-per-view too requires a few big

/5 successes and sustained effort by multiple parties to make it into a habit that mirrors the pay-per-view in cinema theaters.
