Extensive contact tracing helped countries like Japan and South Korea avoid lockdowns and keep deaths from Covid-19 to a tiny fraction of those seen in the West.
How does Europe compare? My piece on how the continent has taken a different approach irishtimes.com/news/health/co…
This week we had a rare press briefing from @ECDC_EU and I managed to cram in three questions into the one chance I got. They were:
- given increased evidence of role of shared air in spreading virus, why isn't ventilation added to standard advice on distancing, handwashing etc?
- given the evidence of sustained neurological damage and damage to lungs and organs of younger Covid survivors, what picture is emerging of the longer term impact on population health?
- Finally, why is ECDC advice (contrary to effective systems in Asia) focused only on tracing to whom patients may have given the virus; and not where they themselves caught it, therefore finding where the virus is spreading and allowing for more precise measures to stop spread?
Here you can see my questions and the response which I didn't find particularly satisfactory.
(Hashtag nomakeup had no time that morning)
This is the follow-up email I sent to ECDC to ask the contact-tracing question again as I could have articulated it better in the press conference. They referred me back to the answer in the press conference
I asked if we could have more ECDC briefings as so many journalists had more questions to ask, apparently they have taken note of this request 🤞
