Somehow nobody is talking about acute bed capacity.
Unlike the first wave, Ottaw public health is now reporting 100% of acute beds occupied despite only 14 COVID admissions.
Peel public health is reporting 92% acute beds full and 82% of ICU beds full
Toronto public health is doing a bit better at 89% acute bed occupancy and “only” 60% of ICU capacity full.
Houston, a city of comparable size to Toronto, despite having multiple times the daily case numbers of the whole province, has greater than the entire acute bed capacity of UHN, Mt. Sinai and Sunnybrook available.
We don’t have this extra hospital capacity in Ontario.
Any halfway significant increase in the number of COVID admissions will be a disaster for acute bed capacity and ongoing ability to deliver usual care in Ontario.
GTA docs like @IrfanDhalla were correct. @fordnation must do more and must do it now.
