Yo the directors of @TheEconomist . As a Mexican citizen i urge you to support with evidence and serious support your following remarks regarding our president of Mexico. @lopezobrador_ :
“They look like an attempt to silence critical voices in the Mexican media by a populist president who has already hobbled previously independent institutions such as the Supreme Court and regulatory agencies” this is a serious accusation. Prove it!
“Some critics of past presidents have been murdered (as have journalists who fell foul of crime gangs). “ what are you trying to imply?
“His government has mismanaged the pandemic.” Prove it comparing the regions results, including peer Latin American countries regarding deaths per million inhabitants, or even USA OR EUROPE!
“A president who claims to champion the poor has done little to prevent their numbers multiplying” prove it! You are THE economic source of opinion and have ways to do serious remarks thru empirical evidence.
“That mirrors the fears of intellectuals in Brazil regarding their populist president, Jair Bolsonaro. Mr Bolsonaro is of the right, and amlo claims to be of the left.”
“But it increasingly looks as if the main difference between them is merely that the Mexican speaks more softly and has nicer manners.”
For decades you have earned respect from economists and serious thinkers alike. Please I urge you to keep working on it. I urge you to have
Full respect for a president of Mexico who deserves to be treated much higher than a banana republic leader. Your article seems to me irresponsibly copied and pasted by the opinion of a group of people who have opposed Mr @lopezobrador_ and whose opinion is not backed by many
Including me. You can do better than that in risking your reputation. As a serious and responsible economist, but mainly as a Mexican patriot, I remain at your disposition to clarify and rectify your otherwise irresponsible opinions of the president of Mexico. Truly yours
