THE TITANOMACHY; THE BATTLE BETWEEN THE TITANS AND THE GODS
Greek Mythology
The Titanomachy as it is widely known, was the ten year long battle between the older generation of gods(the titans) and the newer generation of gods(the Olympian gods)
This war was also known as the Titan war and the battle of the gods. It was fought in Thessaly.
After Zeus had freed his siblings and taken over power from his titan father Cronus, he knew that a war was approaching them. Cronus would not give up power easily and had already made promise of a battle. Due to this, Zeus sent his sisters Demeter, Hestia, and Hera to safety
Hera was sent to stay with Oceanus. This might cause confusion as Oceanus was a Titan god, but not all titans fought against Zeus in the war. Oceanus would later on help Hera with her husband's(Zeus) infidelities and numerous offspirngs
The act of "betrayal" from Zeus regarding Cronus was the fuse that kick started the war. On one side stood Zeus and his brothers and on the other stood Cronus and his Titan army and allies.
Led by Zeus, the gods had the mountain Olympus as their headquarters and became known as
the gods of Olympus, while Cronus and his army had the mount Othrys(2nd image) as their headquarters.
The army of Cronus had a general, and he was a mighty Titan named Atlas. Atlas was the one put in charge of leading the attacks against the Olympian gods
For ten years the Titans and Olympians fought each other for power, and it had started looking like the Titans were the ones with the upper hand. Knowing the power the Titan army and their general wielded, Zeus decided to look for reinforcements. He travelled to Tartarus and
freed the Cyclops and the Hecatonchires. He asked for their help to defeat Cronus, they agreed. Grateful to Zeus for releasing them, the Cyclops created great weapons for the Olympian gods. Zeus was given his famous thunder bolt that could cause great thunderstorms and lightning
Poseidon was given a Trident capable of causing great storms and earthquakes. Hades was given his helmet of terror which gave him the power of invisibility. With these great weapons and their new allies, the gods were able to win the decade long war at the last minute
With the Titans defeated, Zeus claimed supreme power over the universe. He banished the Titans to Tartarus and told the Hecatoncheires to guard the powerful gates made by Poseidon to hold the Titans back. Zeus had a special punishment for Atlas as he was the one leading the army
Atlas was given the burden of holding up the weight of the earth for eternity. This is why Atlas is sometimes referred to as the strongest titan/god.
Gaia, after seeing her children slaughtered in the war and banished, she became unhappy with Zeus and began plotting his downfall
