We see that YouTube, FB etc have created a place for misogyny to hide and thrive. We name it. But we don't stop it. Three women in Kerala are done with being polite. Ystdy, they barged into a lodge from where a man was posting vids like "do feminists wear underwear"& punched him.
The women are on the pg 1 of probably every newspaper in Kerala today: dubbing artist Bhagyalakshmi, activists and former Bigg Boss contestants Diya Sana& Sreelakshmi Arackal. They threw ink& itching powder at him, and created a spectacle by live-streaming the whole thing on FB.
Kerala's social media is split on these bold women& their unchecked rage. But it for sure made a point agnst the unchecked violence by men. Better than watching 'Social Dilemma' on Netflix?
Meanwhile, they now face probe under unbailable charges based on the complaint by the man
This man— who calls himself Vijay P Nair, a psychologist, film worker and writer— started his YouTube channel 'vitrix scene' only four months ago. He reportedly started by airing vids on cinema and the stock market, some of the most popular ways to monetise. During the assault,
he confessed to spicing up things, as he later segued into vids like (transl from Mal) 'Ways to woo women'& 'Aroused by son'.
On 14 Aug, his video ('Do feminists wear underwear?') claimed Indian feminists, esp from Kerala, do not wear underwear as they seek to have sex often.
His verbal diarrhea went: Kerala feminists are like toilets in public transport stands, they have sex eight-nine times every day, one dubbing artist would have sex after every movie, slut-shammed Sabarimala-fame Rahna Fathima, Trupti Desai, Bindu Amminni and Kanaka Durga.
The women had reportedly lodged a complaint to at least four state organs— Women's Commission, Police Cyber Cell, Women & Child Development Department and Gender Advisor— yielding to no actions. Ystdy, they got the man to apologise and "seized" his laptop and mobile phone.
Ain't it is a classic case of justice finally catching up with on-screen violence? With a Tarantinoesque (or Suresh Gopi-esque if you want) spin?
In the absence of proper policing, cyber laws& monitoring by SM giants, this is how people will tackle vicious digital channels?
What explains the rise of angry young women in Kerala?
