Back in February, a Champions League football match between teams from Valencia and Lombardy appeared to act as a super-spreading event, seeding COVID in Europe, with spread soon to NYC.

It takes tremendous political will to stand in front of the power of football, but it's crucial that the love of the game - and the prize money waiting - do not let us backtrack into seeing more COVID cases.

On Thursday, Hungary allowed for Bayern Munich and Sevilla to play a UEFA SuperCup match in front of over 15K spectators. Cases are rising steadily in Hungary and also Spain. There's no reason to repeat this.

Hungary was not the best place to host a football match given rising COVID cases. Stadiums may be outdoors but lots of mixing - as fans takes buses, walk to reach their seats or go to a pub after - happens indoors.
