We recorded tomorrow's show this morning, and I've been thinking about why I had such a hard time getting my words under me (other than, you know, lack of sleep, overwhelming stress, and profound concern for the direction of our country).
We're seeing lots of messages from people that, paraphrased, go like this: Sorry, Sarah and Beth, but I don't have any nuance left.
And you know what? I don't have a lot right now either. I am beyond finished with the Republican Party and its leadership.
Where I preserve my nuance is for the distinction between the Republican Party and its leadership and people in life who adhere to aspects of what the Party or the President say they're about.
Is that a function of privilege? Absolutely. I also think its a responsibility attendant to privilege. I can stay in relationship with people who are in very different places than I am on the issues, and that's how I'm able to most effectively make a difference.
So, when I struggle with the conversation about Amy Coney Barrett or Trump's tax returns, it's not because I'm struggling for or on behalf of Amy Coney Barrett or Donald Trump or Mitch McConnell or anyone else that we could name.
It's because I'm struggling with the very entrenched emotions and defensiveness and fears of people who don't have the power of a vote in the Senate.
I would love for every single person in my life to read the New York Times and the opinions of the US Supreme Court. (This is not hyperbole. I actually wish every person would do these 2 things). But, that's not the reality in which I find myself.
So I have abundant patience and grace for people caught up in media echo chambers and generational expectations. And I'm doing my best to be a person who says, "I GET IT and here's why I see this so differently, and here's what I think is at stake."
I don't always do that well. It's certainly not always or even most of the time effective. But it feels like a calling, and I'm just trying hard to stick with that. -beth
