Webinar: Women, Covid-19 & food systems in Africa
Thurs 1 Oct 13:00–14:00

How has this affected women in informal markets – as farmers, fishers, traders?

How are they responding?

We're launching new research on the impacts of Covid-19 on food systems in Tanzania, Ghana and South Africa - countries with diverse food systems and politics. Join us for this exciting conversation! @LandNnes @EsaffHQ @MasifundiseDT @NETRIGHT @IDRC_CRDI plaas.org.za/african-food-s…

Three African women professors are co-leading this research: delighted to be alongside @DzodziTsikata again and valued colleague Prof. Moenieba Isaacs. #Africanfoodsystems

Food systems in Africa were contested spaces before the Covid-19 pandemic arrived, with competing approaches to achieving the right to food. The number of people going hungry was already rising in sub-Saharan Africa before Covid. @FAO @FAOnews @safoodsov @FoodSecurity_za

Our aim is to inform & influence responses to Covid-19 and future shocks, by investigating how different policies and practices affect and reshape food systems in three African countries - bringing voices of small-scale farmers, fishers & traders to the fore. #Africanfoodsystems

Women are the majority of food producers and traders in Africa, most are small-scale and are largely in the informal sector. Interventions need to focus on right to food, livelihoods for people within food systems and voice and agency for women, the economically marginalised.
