Are we winning the battle against extremism? Or are we losing it? That's the BIG question posed by the new @hopenothate magazine, out later this week.

It's the latest in the revamped editions of @hopenothate magazine, each one asking major themed 'questions' (fear & lies during the pandemic, post-Brexit Britain, and climate scepticism & denial meets the far right) 👇

How should we tackle the threat of rising extremism? Whether from rapidly spreading dangerous conspiracies such as QAnon or posed by teenage terror-advocating gangs using regular social media platforms? It's a question @lowles_nick and I ask.

We asked @focaldataHQ to poll the British public on their attitudes to extremism. We got a mixed bag of opinions. Not surprising, really, given even the Government's own confused response to extremism (relying heavily on counter-terror strategies) ⬇️
hopenothate.org.uk/2020/09/27/con…
• Extremism is a subjective issue
• There is little consensus around what extremism is, or how to combat it
• There is also a lack of trust in the Government defining extremism
• A significant minority (28%) supports potentially breaking the law or even countenancing violence
People do think that social media giants should be held responsible for hate on their platforms, though.
I spoke to Sara Khan of @CommissionCE about her ideas for reforming the Govt's official counter-extremism strategy, including a new definition of "hateful extremism". She's attracted some strong views and hopes the Commission will become a statutory body.

What do British Muslims *really* think about issues like the police, Prevent and Islamist extremists? @CrestAdvisory carried out a unique poll earlier this year to find out – with some surprising results.
hopenothate.org.uk/2020/09/16/cre…
What really goes on inside the Government's Prevent safeguarding programme? It's had a controversial rep: but as regional Prevent lead @hhi1 points out, that's often (very) far from the reality ⬇️

The excellent investigative work of @patrik_h is on show in this exposé of a youth terror-advocating group, The British Hand, active on Instagram and Telegram ⚠️

Still with @patrik_h here's his take on @telegram, which despite our (and others') constant warnings is STILL hosting extreme and dangerous content 😱
hopenothate.org.uk/2020/09/27/tel…
How does a city prevent extremists from (quite literally) running riot? The great example of the campaigning that took place in Bradford prior to an EDL demo in 2010 stands out, as @pmezzie explains.
hopenothate.org.uk/2020/09/27/bra…
If we move away from violence and terror, what defines extremism? Were the protests around two Birmingham primary schools last year examples of "hateful extremism", for example, or simply schools riding roughshod over concerned parents' religious views..?
hopenothate.org.uk/2020/09/16/bir…
Will keeping terrorists in jail longer help the UK’s *counter-terrorism* efforts? That's part of measures being considered in a new Counter-Terrorism and Sentencing Bill. But @EmsWinterbotham of @RUSI_org isn't convinced.

Is there life after hate? 🤔 I really enjoyed speaking with @Faradayspeaks about his journey out of a world of alt-right beliefs, alongside his boss @milleridriss about their work together on interventions and youth deradicalisation.

⬆️⬇️ Do listen out for the podcast we recorded with @Faradayspeaks @milleridriss too! 📻
(@lowles_nick will also be speaking to Sara Khan of @CommissionCE and @patrik_h will talk about his investigations)
