Yet another area of possible Turkey-France rhetorical escalation.
Macron's position can be criticized from the standpoint of inconsistency.
The international community has so far stood up to attempts by nation states to acquire territory by force. That was the case against Saddam’s Iraq. That is also the rationale of the EU and US sanctions against Russia.
Yet the same degree of strong will for enforcement is conspicuously absent in the case of Karabakh which is Azerbaijan territory under occupation of Armenia. Instead the international community relied on the mechanism of the Minsk Group to steer the parties towards a settlement.
The steering members of the Minsk group including France have a responsibility in today's escalation and its militarisation. Karabakh is a case study in terms of how long conflicts can remain frozen in the absence of genuine efforts by the international community to resolve them.
