VIRTUAL LEARNING SURVEY RESULTS, A THREAD:

We conducted a survey of PWCS HS students on the first two weeks of virtual learning (9/8-9/18).

The survey was open from 9/21 to 9/27.

It received nearly 4,300 responses in total, with representation from each of the high schools.

Question 1:
How is Prince William County Schools Virtual Learning working for you?
1= Not well
4= Very well

Question 2:
Which of the following do you see as benefits to learning in a virtual environment (check all that apply)?

The most common selections:
1. No classes on Mondays (88.9%)
2. Later start times (87.0%)
3. Breaks in between classes (73.7%)

Question 3:
Which of the following do you see as challenges with learning in a virtual environment (check all that apply)?

The most common selections:
1. Heavier workload (68.3%)
2. Harder to focus in class (59.8%)
3. Stress on the eyes (57.1%)

Question 4:
For the 2nd quarter, which option would you choose?

*Note: this survey was open from 9/21-9/27*

Question 5:
Do you believe the 8:30 virtual start time to be beneficial?

CHOICE FOR Q2 BASED ON HS:

There seems to be no significant difference in the % of students choosing hybrid and virtual at each of the high schools. Each is around the 60% range.

CHOICE FOR Q2 BASED ON GRADE LEVEL:

Among sophomores, juniors, and seniors, the % of students choosing hybrid is the same (just under 60%), but the freshmen show a small jump (67% hybrid).

CHOICE FOR Q2 BASED ON RANKING OF VIRTUAL LEARNING:

There is a strong correlation between respondents' ranking of the first two weeks of virtual learning (1=not going well, 2= going very well) and their selected choice for Q2.

RANKING OF VIRTUAL LEARNING BASED ON GRADE LEVEL:

Grade does not have a significant effect on a student's ranking of virtual learning.

CHOICE FOR Q2 BASED ON OPINION OF LATER START TIMES:

Students' opinions on later start times do not have a significant effect on their choice for Q2.

EVALUATION:
Values- Large sample, responses from each HS, several admin posted on Canvas and sent en masse emails

Limitations- Voluntary response bias, online format, the timeline of the survey may not accurately represent current or future opinion as more announcements are made

SUMMARY:
About 60% of students said they would choose hybrid for Q2, and 40% for virtual.

The best predictor from above of a student's Q2 choice is their ranking of virtual learning.
School, grade, and opinion of later start times do not seem to have a significant effect.
