We are so excited to be sharing calls to action all October long. We’re a group of grad students promoting accessibility in higher ed. To kick off October, we'll be introducing ourselves to you in this thread. #NDEAM #DisInGradSchool 1/

@DisInGradSchool Since we want to build this community and get to know you, we also ask that you introduce yourselves as a reply to this thread. Don't forget the hashtags: #NDEAM and #DisInGradSchool.

Then, like and retweet folks to make this community cozy and supportive. 2/

@DisInGradSchool Hi I’m @Nicole_Lee_Sch I’m a PhD Candidate studying the history of disability, medicine, and welfare in early America. I look at how early disabled Americans resisted medicalization and secured resources despite increasing barriers to access. 3/

@DisInGradSchool I care about #NDEAM because I want to see representation in higher ed. I want to see Disability Studies programs run by disabled faculty. I want to see DEI initiatives with disability representation. I want to see disability recognized as diversity. -Nicole 4/

@DisInGradSchool A boring fact about me is that I built my own physical card catalogue for my dissertation research. -Nicole 5/

@DisInGradSchool I’m @caitskirby, a PhD candidate in biological sciences studying mitochondrial DNA copy number regulation in worms. I love teaching and making learning accessible to all learners. You can find some materials on my website: caitkirby.com 6/

@DisInGradSchool In my spare time, I’m working on a book project regarding disabled graduate students. If you’d like to participate, send me an email: caitskirby@gmail.com. -Cait 7/

@DisInGradSchool I joined DIGS to highlight the inaccessibility of higher ed to disabled folks and begin tearing down the barriers. I’m interested in promoting actions for #NDEAM so everyone can get involved in promoting access. - Cait 8/

@DisInGradSchool A boring fact about me is that I love to listen to rain and fireplace sounds while I work and read. - Cait 9/

@DisInGradSchool Hi, I’m @KaydenStockwell & I’m a developmental psychology PhD student. I study autistic social interaction & perceptions of autistic people. I’ve been working on a hyperscanning EEG project and hope to use mobile eye-tracking in some of my future projects 10/

@DisInGradSchool I'm involved w/ DIGS because the 1st time a professor shared w/ me they were autistic was a whispered secret. Because I was told I can’t talk about being autistic if I wanted to be taken seriously. Because higher ed has potential to be accessible but isn’t -K 11/

@DisInGradSchool #NDEAM provides an opportunity to push for action and awareness. Higher ed is a more accessible place of employment for me than other jobs, but it could be better. It has a long way to go in meeting even baseline accessibility needs for many disabled folx -K 12/

@DisInGradSchool A boring fact about me is I always carry an emergency pair of socks -K 13/

@DisInGradSchool Hi I’m @ChronInvisSTEM (aka @caffeinatedkrys) and I’m a PhD candidate & part-time field scientist studying atmospheric chemistry. I look at how air quality is affected when natural emissions (such as those from trees) mix with human-made pollution. 14/

@DisInGradSchool I became disabled mid-way thru grad school, I was shocked to see how different my experiences were pre- & post-disability. I thought I couldn't succeed in higher ed b/c of my disability. In reality, 99% of my difficulties are due to #AcademicAbleism -Krystal 15/

@DisInGradSchool Academia is probably the one place that can best accommodate my disability, but it's a constant uphill battle to acquire accommodations. Academia can do better. #NDEAM & DIGS provide the opportunity to spread awareness and push for action. -Krystal 16/

@DisInGradSchool One boring fact I named my cane “Mr. Caney” because I’m super creative! (sarcasm) In fact, my subpar skill of coming up with names is why I decided my cat should just keep the name she was given at her foster home. lol -Krystal 17/

@DisInGradSchool Now that you've met us, we want to meet you!

Tweet your reply in this thread with a little info about yourself, including a boring fact! You don't need to be disabled to participate and you don't need to disclose disability status. 18/
