I don’t like telling people to vote anymore, the blanket statement seems nonsensical to me considering most of the people that’ll read that are going to vote for a party down the ballot without ever reading what any candidate is for.
(1)
They’ll vote how that party tells them to vote for measures without reading how that measure actually affects people.
In 2018 in the US a dead man won Nevada’s election, in CA a man indicted of dozens of criminal charges including campaign finance crimes won the election,
(2)
and stories like that happen every time. Because people have been told to vote for a certain party, but not to participate critically and honestly in “democracy.”
I honestly believe this is most common amongst Christians.
(4)
Because of Christianity’s call to submit and obey, and the fear mongering rampant amongst Christians, it is very common for Christians to be told to just vote for the Conservative party to uphold “Christian values.”
(5)
But that’s not exactly what happens when you vote without knowing anything about the candidates/measures you are voting for. You may end up quite literally voting for a man who’s stealing your tax money for extravagant vacations (East San Diegans say hi to Duncan Hunter 👋🏽).
(6)
I don’t vote for a party down the ballot, I don’t vote blindly for measures. I read and make my own informed decisions. We have to stop telling people that voting will solve their problems, it won’t, 2016 and history are proof. In 2016 alone we voted,
(7)
the popular vote went to Clinton for well over 2 million votes and here we are with Trump as president. And Clinton though a bit better wouldn’t have solved our problems.
What will change things is people getting informed, educating themselves, fighting misinformation,
(8)
listening to and thinking about the most marginalized and centering them w/our social engagement.
I’m not going to ask anyone to vote, I will ask however that you get educated on the issues in your local community, read about those who wish to represent you and use your $,
(9)
make decisions based on what’s best for the most marginalized, because if the least of these are taken care of then we will all be well.
The goal is not to vote, but to move our communities toward heaven!
