Sharing my Personal Knowledge Management system is made up of 4 types of note:
- A capture note: unedited text captured in various ways
- Organisation notes
- Distil notes: expressing capture notes in my own words
- Express notes are my original ideas
In more detail... (THREAD)
1/ Capture notes are imported into Roam and tagged #Capture:
- Articles and newsletters go into Instapaper. When I read I make highlight which syncs with Readwise
- I highlight in Kindle which syncs with Readwise
- I upload PDFs to Liner and export highlights to Roam
- I capture from physical books using the camera in the Readwise app on my phone
- I DM Tweets to Readwise
- I send podcast snippets to Roam via @AirrAudio
- I'm missing a workflow for audiobooks!!
2/ I organise in Roam by creating an Inbox page with 2 queries:
1. {{query:{or:[[Quick Capture]][[FleetNotes]]}}} which lists all my quick capture and fleetnotes for processing into 3 types of note
2. {{query:{and:[[Capture]]{or:[[Waiting]][[In Progress]]}}}} for capture notes
3/ Distil into my own words
Every day I try to process capture notes into literature notes.
Understanding something means writing it in your own words.
4/ Express in my own ideas.
The final step is creating permanent notes a.k.a evergreen notes or zettels. These are notes that can be understood without knowing the context they are taken from. A.k.a atomic.
They are tagged to link into my 12 favourite problems.
This is all work in progress!!
I used to use Evernote for everything, but when Roam came along, I found a way to make my notes come alive. Discovering BASB was a game changer too.
