This Day, 1789: The first presidential proclamation. George Washington, at the request of Congress, designated November 26 as a day of national Thanksgiving. Here's how it appeared in newspapers:

President Lincoln with his on-again, off-again commander of the Army of the Potomac: Gen. George McClellan. Antietam, this day, 1862

Some presidents are thin-skinned and lack a sense of humor. One president who was NOT like this was Harry Truman. Cartoonists made fun of him all the time; the man from Independence knew that just went with the job. Here he jokes with them - this day in 1949

Ronald Reagan with a good pal. This day, 1988

"We can make America great again," Bill Clinton said this day in 1991 - as he entered the presidential race

Blackhawk Down: This day in 1993, U.S. troops, sent to Somalia in 1992 as peacekeeping forces in that country's civil war, got drawn into the fight instead. In a battle that extended into the next day, 19 Americans were killed, 73 wounded and 1 was captured; two helos were lost

This Day, 2008: Amid a steep economic collapse, George W. Bush signed a $700 billion bill to bail out big U.S. banks. The “Troubled Asset Relief Program” (TARP) was designed to use taxpayer dollars to buy mortgage-backed securities and other distressed assets /1

Bush hoped that TARP would bolster confidence in the U.S. economy - which had been devastated by a collapsing housing industry, stock market and surging unemployment. Many economists and historians said it was the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression of the 1930s
