Some interesting responses to this thread. Some further thoughts and clarifications.... 1/7

Engaging with people to discuss the situation reveals we all share lots of common ground, even when initial responses suggest otherwise. Accurate information can dispel anxiety even if it isn't the good news we hope for. 2/7

Lots of people (including many doctors) are really worried about NHS services for other medical conditions, not just COVID. You are absolutely right and we are working incredibly hard to make sure we keep all services going this time round. 3/7

The biggest impact on usual NHS services is from infection control procedures to prevent people catching COVID-19 in hospital. We have green, amber, red zones and more: in effect hospitals within hospitals. This makes everything more difficult, slowing patient throughput. 4/7

In my book a COVID 'denier' is not someone who speaks up for the importance of usual NHS work, but someone who pretends the pandemic doesn't exist. Very few such people in the UK I'm happy to say. 5/7

One or two voices speaking up for patients deemed not appropriate for ICU care. Sorry if I was a little defensive. But we don't need to ventilate anyone to show how much we care. Or keep them for months in ICU to prove our love. ICU is a high-burden treatment. 6/7

Most of all, I am simply amazed by the huge amount of understanding and appreciation for @NHSuk. It is truly a privilege to care for you. Despite all that has happened in recent years, kindness still binds us together. Leaving you with another lovely image from @jometsonscott 7/7
