Sleeping on It...thoughts from last nights loss to Iowa St.

1. That one followed the script of the Georgia loss. And yet another game we blew a double digit lead only to eek out a win or lose. Since that night in the Rose Bowl, OU has “blown” 10+ point leads 7 times, losing 4.

2. Some positives on defense. Effort. I saw a bunch of guys in the secondary playing hard. DL played better. More pressure, better at filling gaps. We could have had some game-changing series had we wrapped up or taken better angles at times.

3. The secondary had a rough night. And it’s frustrating when it’s against a team that couldn’t move the ball against Louisiana. Fields said after the game that there’s not much you can do when the receiver is 6-5. He’s not wrong. But you gotta look better doing it.

4. The officials called every PI and hold on our guys because of the obvious struggle they were having. At least 3 ranged from borderline tickytack to downright ridiculous. But when one doesn’t play the ball, one doesn’t get calls. ISU was also physical and got zero flags.

5. Another problem with not playing the ball is sometimes the ball comes within catchable range and you’re unready to catch it. OU added to its NCAA lead on CBBOHNF (catchable balls bouncing off hands, numbers, or facemask). I think with 2 Ls we start trotting out other options.

6. The lemon juice in the papercut moment was when ABC broke away to show a 4’9” Clemson defender turn around, jump high in the air, and one hand intercept a ball in the end zone. “Now back to you Sean and Todd.” Every OU fan: 🤦🏽‍♂️

7. We need Ronnie Perkins.

8. Gabe missed a FG. But it was really long and only crap teams playing OU make those.

9. Speaking of Gabe, I do appreciate his ability to kick it out of the EZ. But when he doesn’t, is it too much to ask to have some kick coverage?

10. Rattler played really well. Only a couple bad decisions. Didn’t think it was a stellar night for our receivers, but Iowa St annually does a good job limiting our offense. The last interception should have been a flag. So that’s not on SR.

11. Clearly Iowa St is who we thought they would be going into the season, not who they were in their annual opening game disaster. Even if OU was a playoff caliber team that only lost its usual one random Big 12 game, last night could’ve easily been that one.

12. Iowa St’s students are better at mask wearing and social distancing than SMU’s.

13. Would like to see Marcus Major develop into a back that can get us tough yards.

14. Kicking the FG on 4th and goal from the 2’ line set a bad tone.

15. As bad as it was, two people catch a ball that hits them in the hands in or near the end zone and we are 2-1.

16. As bad as it was, one defensive back catches a ball that hits him in the hands (or face) and we are 2-1.

17. As bad as it was, make a FG or a touchback, 2-1.

18. OL played better. Still not where we need to be. But we are going to end up with a very potent run game.

19. It’s all about 2021 now. Get on a roll. Find the right mixes. Build momentum. Make a run in 21!

20. Beat Texas!
