Thread : Commemoration of Hindu Victims of Noakhali Hindu massacre that took place on 10th October 1946 :

1946, Direct Action Day led by Jinnah sparked a number of riots. One of which was the Noakhali riots (Chittagong Division of Bengal, now in Bangladesh ).It was series of semiorganized massacres, rapes, abductions and forced conversions of Hindus to Islam, looting and arson.

This affected a radius of more than 2000 square miles including  Ramganj, Begumganj, Raipur, Lakshmipur, Chhagalnaiya, Sandwip police stations in Noakhali district, Hajiganj, Faridganj, Chandpur,Laksham and Chauddagram police stations in Tipperah district.

The massacre of the Hindu population started on 10 October, on the day of Kojagari Lakshmi Puja and continued unabated for about a week. It is estimated that 5,000 were killed, hundreds of Hindu women were raped and thousands of Hindu men /women were forcibly converted to Islam.

Around 50,000 to 75,000 survivors were sheltered in temporary relief camps in Comilla, Chandpur, Agartala and other places. Around 50,000 Hindus remained marooned in the affected areas under the strict surveillance of the Muslims where they were raped.

The administration had no say. In some areas, Hindus had to obtain permits from the Muslim leaders in order to travel outside their villages. The forcibly converted Hindus were coerced to give written declarations that they had converted to Islam of their own free will.

They were confined in muslim's houses and only allowed to be in their own house when an official party came for inspection. Hindus were forced to pay subscriptions to the Muslim League and jiziyah, the protection tax paid by dhimmis in an Islamic state.

All this started with a mere rumor of hindus carrying weapons which was later proved to be false. Congressmen were murdered,  their houses were set ablaze and their properties were looted. They broke the temples, stole the idols.

They butchered cows, then threw the body inside the temple. The Shiva temple of Dr. Jadunath Majumdar of Chandipur was one of them. Numerous hindu freedom fighters, writers, poets were killed.

Gandhi about Noakhali : After Noakhali Hindu massacre, Gandhi with his Non - Violence Ideology and peace between Hindus and Muslims organized a peace parade.

In a talk with the villagers of Fatehpur, he appealed to their reason by saying: “ It is the easiest thing to harass the Hindus here, as you Muslims are in the majority. But is it just as honourable? Show me, please, if such a mean action is suggested anywhere in your Quran.

I am a student of the Quran..So, in all humility I appeal to you to dissuade your people from committing such crimes,so that your own future may be bright" However this didn't seem to resonate with the pain of hindu population and hence didn't help the hindus as the damage...

.. has been done and a mere teaching of moral values wasn't enough. Gandhi started for Noakhali on 6 November and reached Chaumuhani the next day. After spending two nights at the residence of Jogendra Majumdar, on 9 November he embarked on his tour of Noakhali.

He set up his base in a half-burnt house in the village of Srirampur, where he stayed until 1 January. He organised prayer meetings. And then he met local Muslim leaders and tried to win their confidence which put the hindus in anguish. Look at his Priorities.

Mistrust between Hindus and Muslims continued to exist and stray incidents of violence occurred even during his stay in Noakhali.  Gandhi on multiple events asked Hindus to have faith and unite with their criminals. That's why I say Gandhi made Hindus gullible like today.

On 12 February 1947, while addressing a rally at Comilla, A. K. Fazlul Huq concluded that Gandhi's presence in Noakhali had harmed Islam enormously ignoring the mass killing of hindus.

Resentment towards Gandhi started to grow on both the sides and people started boycotting his peace meetings. Gandhi halted the peace parade.

Later when the telegrams received by Congress were unleashed where there were texts mentioning about 'burning Hindus alive' , Gandhi made a remark which shook the whole Hindu population of India. He called for hindus to "leave Noakhali or perish".
