Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. Excellent adaptation of Roald Dahl’s book from Tim Burton. Starring Johnny Depp and Freddie Highmore. Filmed and Produced in London alongside the stop motion film Corpse Bride. #JohnnyDepp

Through a very faithful plot line that respects the dark humour of Roald Dahl and uses his exact songs, all sang by Danny Elfman himself, the film gives another take to the magic and poetry of Roald Dahl’s classic. An adaptation that the Dahl Estate adored.

Note also how in the film, we have the first entry of the first Chocolate room as a minuscule doorway. That moment made me think of Alice in Wonderland and knowing that Tim would work on that film project in 2009, I find it a wonderful irony and premonition.

Many visual references in Tim Burton’s film. You can note German Expressionism, but also multi coloured lighting influenced by Mario Bava, whom Tim Burton is a fan.

In its production, stunning set designs and special effects were employed. Some referencing pop culture like anime and Harajuku fashion, circus and candy attractions, and nods to Tim Burton’s motifs (ex: spirals, hills, etc.)

In the Charlie Chocolate Factory film, Tim Burton continues what he started in Big Fish. Chance to reconcile with his childhood and difficult parent memories. One memory is a horrible tooth device that Charlie wore and which Tim had himself in his youth.

Another childhood theme Tim presents here is Willy’s reconciliation with his dad. Something that Tim experienced with his mum, who lived like a hermit inside a 🏡 with her 🐱 . In it, Helena & Tim found many posters, tie-in products and copies of his 🎥 & articles. Which 😭 him

Through his performance Johnny Depp presents the dark humour and eccentricity of Willy Wonka. Including the effect of loneliness and outsider nature affecting Wonka’s communication skills. One of Johnny Depp’s best roles.

In conclusion, Tim Burton’s Charlie & the 🍫 Factory is a delightful film and the first trio experience between Tim, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. A must if you enjoy Tim Burton. And also the second film where Tim confronted & reconciled with his parents through 🎞

4 wonderful images in Tim Burton’s adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Little trivia: When meeting Liccy Dahl, Roald Dahl’s widow, Tim visited Roald’s writing hut and inside it, he recognized it as the inspiration behind Charlie’s house. Which 😊 Liccy as she said Tim was one of the few people who realized the connection.
