@mdc_martinus 1/5 In 1896, CO2 leve was a proxy for a host of airborne contaminants, from people (breathing/sweating/etc), and also indoor combustion, for lighting, heating & cooking.

CO2, by itself, is harmless to far higher concentrations:

@mdc_martinus 2/5 Numerous studies have found that CO2 levels elevated to more than 8x the current average outdoor level of 415 ppmv (0.0415%) are harmless to humans & animals. NASA kept the atmosphere in the Space Shuttle at about 5000 ppmv (0.5%) CO2.

@mdc_martinus 3/5 The air in the International Space Station is kept at about 4 mm Hg = 5400 ppmv (0.54%) CO2, though one study recommends that they lower that to 2.5 mm Hg = 3300 ppmv.

@mdc_martinus 4/5 CO2 levels in submarines are often even higher, with no apparent ill effects.

@mdc_martinus 5/5 Commercial greenhouses typically use CO2 generators to keep daytime CO2 levels between about 1200 and 1500 ppmv, because it is tremendously beneficial for the plants, and harmless to workers: a fact which has been known to science for >100 years.
