« Everyone was a slave to something »
─ A long and detailed thread about the " Midnight Sun " episode dedicated to explain why Levi choosing Armin over Erwin actually means choosing Erwin and his happiness:
#Eruri
All Attack on Titan fans know what " Midnight Sun " episode is, but there are a lot of people thinking Levi did it for Armin/Eren or because he hated Erwin.
So this thread is specifically dedicated to this episode and why it shows how much Levi cares about Erwin!
Before starting the mission Erwin gave Levi the only serum they had, he had the responsibility to use it the best way.
What is the serum? It is a special injection that can turn someone dying into a Titan, eating a shifter they will come back human with the Titans power.
The first intention was to use the serum on Armin: he was miraculously still breathing after being burned alive. Eren asked Levi to give him the serum, but he looked very gloomy and hesitating...at the end Levi agreed and the serum almost reached Eren's hand....when..
Floch arrived. He had Erwin on his back.
He was badly injured after the fight against the Beast Titan, but he was still not dead.
Levi's expression immediately changed. He was incredulous.
Levi checked Erwin's status and he realized he was really still breathing.
He changed his mind: the serum goes to Erwin. He was the Survey Corps Commander and humanity still needed him.
Let's stop and focus for a moment on Isayama's words about Levi letting Erwin go. He NEVER mentioned Erwin's position as Commander, Levi wanted to bring Erwin back for HIMSELF and not because he was an important figure. The Commander position is just an excuse to chose him.
Levi revealed the true intention behind his actions and explained why he was so hesitating in giving Armin the serum: HE WAS HOPING TO USE IT ON ERWIN.
Levi never stopped thinking about giving the serum to Erwin. He was his first thought and he never changed his mind.
In my opinion, this is one of the most important moments. Floch said that it would have been TOO easy for Erwin to rest like this.
Levi face says it all. He realized how much pain Erwin carried on his shoulders and how much he would have experienced again coming back.
Eren kept talking about Armin and his dream to see the ocean, BUT THIS DIDN'T STOP LEVI.
This is the proof Levi DIDN'T DO IT FOR ARMIN. Even if he listened to Eren he was still convinced to bring Erwin back. Eren's words are NOT the reason he changed his mind.
What does make Levi change his mind? He realized that Erwin was thanking him for finally setting him free from being a slave of his dream and from the pain, guilt and depression that hunted him.
He realized that he needed to finally be free and he ended his pain.
According to Isayama's words « Give up on your dream and die » is just another proof of how much Levi understands Erwin.
Letting Erwin go is the right choice, but Levi is obviously suffering and he is literally sobbing.
The video from the episode explains it better than I can. Levi HIMSELF said that he did it for ERWIN, to finally let him rest. This is NOT open to interpretation. It's canon. It's written in the manga, said in the anime and by Isayama himself.
Erwin died and Levi was broken, but he still had the promise he made him to kill the Beast Titan.
According to Isayama's words
« Because to Levi staying with Erwin until Erwin's last minute gave him a feeling that he has accomplished everything he needs to. »

I'm always bringing this back but it's just because I think it's very important.
When Armin turned into a Titan EVERYONE was looking at him, EXCEPT for Levi: he was still looking at Erwin's dead body.
In the end, Levi admitted that it was his choice to let Erwin die. Marking again the fact that his goal was to let him rest.
Attention, this thread is not dedicated to prove that Levi hated Armin because it's NOT true, but to highlight that his priority was Erwin, not Armin going to the sea.
There are too many people thinking he sent Erwin to death because he considered Armin more important.
Thank you as always for reading, I hope you found it interesting 🥰 Watching the episode to save the screencaps was too painful, I always skip it...I need a hug :')
