Plimsoll style sneakers - essentially a canvas upper + rubber sole. These were popularized by rubber companies in the US - although initially invented in the UK as beachwear...

They're called plimsolls because that characteristic line you see on the rubber sole reminded people of a plimsoll line on a ship.

Apparently the line served a purpose on these shoes like they do on ships - if water got above the line on the shoe your feet would get wet...

Although these sneakers initially started out as beachwear and then became common shoes for various court sports in the US...these days they are worn in a variety of different ways:

Personally, I love the low top style when paired with some chinos.

But you'll see guys adapting these for whatever type of look or aesthetic they're going for.

These two styles you see here which I shared at the top are the OGs...The Jack Purcells and the Chuck Taylors...Jack invented his sneakers for badminton while Chuck invented his for basketball. The Purcells were initially made by PF Flyers...until they were bought out by Converse

If I were to recommend a single option worthy of inclusion in your wardrobe I'd recommend either the Purcells or Taylors...a close second would be SeaVees Hermosas which are also classic.
