Random trip down memory lane today about Al Worden, who was one of my favourite astronauts to meet.

Al was the command module pilot on Apollo 15, making him the guy who stayed in orbit while Dave Scott and Jim Irwin descended to the lunar surface. It's a mission that doesn't get a lot of love, but it had one of my favourite moments: the deep space EVA.

The last three Apollo missions had the CMP recover a film canister from the service module during the transit back to Earth... This is one of my all-time favourite Apollo pics, Earthrise as seen on Apollo 15. The crescent Earth!

After the lunar landing and the crew was on their way home, Al popped outside for a 39 minutes and 7 second spacewalk to collect the film that was mounted in special canisters on the service module. He was the first astronaut to perform a deep space EVA on August 5, 1971.

Just the thought of leaving the spacecraft between the Earth and the Moon freaks me out... so of course this is the shot I had Al sign!

Al died in March of 2020, and he'll always be missed! This shot is from Spacefest 2017.💖🚀
