'Vicky' was born on 2nd Jan 1972 in Dehradun to Lt Col BRS Gupta (R).
He got inspiration to join Army from his father, and was commissioned in 1992
Major Vivek got married to an Army Officer, Capt Rajshree Bisht in 1997.

He was also awarded COAS Commendation for killing Pak terrorist in hand-to-hand combat.
Recognizing his outstanding skills he was soon sent to Infantry School, Mhow, as a weapon instructor.

During Kargil War in 1999, he played significant role in capturing of Tololing Top.

Major Gupta and his men of the 2 RAJ RIF were tasked with the recapture of point 4590 on the treacherous, icy slopes of Tololing in the Drass sector.
He was part of a light machine gun commando team who was asked to recapture Pakistani bunkers along the mountaintop of Tololing.

On June 13, 1999 at 4:10 AM, after capturing two difficult posts in a day , Major Vivek Gupta conveyed message to his CO, Late Col M B Rabindranath, "Sir, I am on the Tololing Top". Bravehearts of 2 RAJ RIF won back Tololing to India, in exchange of their lives.

However, Maj Vivek was killed in action after a series of multidirectional shots were fired on his company from enemy camp which tore open his torso.
"While my 27yr old son proved his blood, his fellow soldiers lived on to win more peaks,” said Lt Col Gupta of his son’s death.

For his act of exemplary bravery, an exhibition of spectacular courage and supreme sacrifice, he was given the nation’s second highest gallantry award, “Maha Vir Chakra” posthumously.
