THREAD: Good morning! I've been up very early this morning to meet a blueberry farmer and her crew in Albany who are trying to beat the heat! They got started at 5am and anticipate to end around 10am when temperatures are too high to work. @OPB
Annie, whose the owner of the farm, started picking last Tuesday and has already seen some fruit that's supposed to be ripe in July ready to pick now.
She's also finding lots of damaged blueberries from the heat. She's worried after today's heat she will find more damaged crops tomorrow.
As of now, about three more hours to go (could be less) before it gets too hot. 88 degrees is when Annie starts to prepare to stop her crew. 92 degrees, time to go home.
It's getting hot y'all. Weather app says 84. Annie doesn't think we will make it til 10am. Might have to finish earlier.
After picking, the blueberries get weighed.
Then ready to ship to the pack house.
One an hour or less to go.
It's time. "VÁMONOS!"
Farmworkers getting in as much as they can in their last buckets. Some will be going home. I'm told some will go to OTHER jobs.
Que calor!
Most of the farmworkers have left now. Annie and the remaining crew will load the blueberries into a truck to send them off. Then, start all over again tomorrow at 5am. Annie hopes the heat today won't damage too much of her crops. She'll have to wait until tomorrow to see.
