RANDOM QUICK THREAD:

"My @DrewBarrymore Story"

So, it's 1990. I'm about to turn 20.

There used to be a great 50s diner on La Cienega Blvd. called Ed Debevic's that we hung out at. There are other locations, but that one was ours.

One night, I'm waiting to pay & there's Drew.

Now, you have to remember that, in 1990, Drew was 15 years old.

She was the ET darling, but she was wild and struggling in her teens and was working hard to straighten her life out.

She had *just* published "Little Girl Lost," about her journey.

My mama raised me on classic movies, and I was very aware of the fact that I was in the presence of true Hollywood Royalty.

Frankly, she intimidated the shit out of 19-year-old me, but I really wanted to say something to her.

I found my courage and approached her...

I told her I was really proud of her and thanked her for her courage in writing her book. I knew it would inspire and help a lot of young girls.

What she did next has stayed with me for three decades...

This global superstar with pedigree and a ponytail got all teary-eyed with those great big eyes, and said, "Oh, thank you so much for saying that to me! I just walked to the bathroom, and that lady over there said, 'there goes that little drug addict,' so thank you!"

She was so genuine.

She was just a sweet kid trying to figure life out, and she had just gotten her feelings hurt.

And now for the moral of this story...

Never miss a chance to say something kind, from your heart, to someone...

Never assume someone "has it all" or is so together, they don't need to hear it...

In that moment, Drew taught me we can all use some encouragement sometimes.

PS: World's Smallest Ice Cream Sundae and Marilyn Monroe doing the hand-jive on the counter... God, I miss that place.
